The Oldest Hardware Store West of the Mississippi
In June 1852, Mr. Franklin Stevens was deeded this property. Mr Stevens and Franklin S. Randall erected a stone building on this site in 1854. Mr Franklin, who acquired the business in December 1855, sold in 1856 to I. H. Nash. Business was started as a Tinsmith Shop and Hardware.
Joseph Smith and I. H. Nash built the brick building in August 1856. During this time it was known as I. H. Nash Hardware. In 1882, it was know as Sturges and Alderson, later Alderson sold to Pioneer Hardware, a corporation.
In the first 50 years, the name and owners changed 6 times, but little else has changed. Wood floors, 4 rolling ladders, original nail bins and holes to sweep the gold dust into still remain.
McKee and Carr leased the business in January, 1905, from Pioneer Hardware. Placerville Hardware was formed in 1907 and it operated as such until Albert and Edna Kyburz purchased it in 1946.
George Fausel purchased Placerville Hardware in 1952. George, along with brothers Elmer and Frank, operated this store for 30 years. David and Dan Fausel, sons of Frank, became partners in 1983 and took over this from their Uncle George. The present owners of this now internationally famous hardware store are David and Deanna Fausel. The store is now run by their oldest son, Albert. He is the third generation to run Placerville Hardware.
The Fausel Family has continuously operated Placerville Hardware for the past 60 years.
